"WHO CAN RETELL THE THINGS THAT BEFELL US":
A CHANUKAH STORY BILLBOARD

Prepared by Susan Jackson and Janet Gat

 1. In Judea, the Jews dwelt in peace. The Holy Temple stood on Mount Moriah, with a single lamp that was kept burning to show the power of their faith.

2. King Antiochus came to Jerusalem and conquered the Jews. Antiochus wants the Jews to forsake their laws and make them bow down before idols and if they refuse, they will die.

3. The Jews refused to bow down to Greek idols.

4. Mattitayahu of Modiin, and his band of Maccabees, would not bow down.

5. The small army of Maccabees fight and lead the Jews to victory under their banner "Whoever is for the Lord, follow me".

6. The Jews return to Jerusalem and see the holy Temple in ruins.

7. The Jews clean the Temple, destroy the idols brought by the king.

8. The Jews found just enough oil to last for one day. However the oil in the lamp lasted for 8 days and 8 nights.

9. The Jews were able to rededicate the Temple and make it pure and beautiful again.

10. And so, like the oil of long ago, the lights of Chanukah still burn brightly, praising God’s glory and the freedom of the Jews. The courageous actions of the Maccabees made it possible for the miracle to happen.
